Laboratory Weighing

Laboratory weighing can be automated and used for various weighing tasks including but not limited to suspended solids, total dissolved solids, organic matter, loss on ignition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and general laboratory weighing for samples. This topic will talk about the various weighing methods and how they are currently done.

Total Dissolved Solids by Gravimetric Analysis

Total Dissolved Solids by Gravimetric Analysis

What are Total Dissolved Solids? Total Dissolved Solids or TDS, is a measure to identify the total soluble solids within a solution. The test is usually performed on drinking water as a high total dissolved solids measurement (greater than 500mg/l) can be harmful for human consumption. Total dissolved solids do not include gases, colloids, or sediment, but consist chiefly of Carbonates, bicarbonates, Chlorides, Sulphates, Phosphates, and Nitrates of Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, and Potassium, with traces of Iron, Manganese and other elements.

Suspended Solids by Gravimetric Analysis

Suspended Solids by Gravimetric Analysis

Why Measure Suspended Solids? The measurement of suspended solids or total suspended solids is to quantify the quality of various aqueous treatment processes and for testing of wastewater quality. The level of suspended solids in water and wastewater effect the quality of water and how it can be used. It is important in some industrial processes to accurately measure the suspended solids for determining the effectiveness of the control process being employed.

6 Keys to Automated Weighing Accuracy

6 Keys to Automated Weighing Accuracy

Weighing and measurement find applications in almost every industry. It is an extensive process that involves substantial human effort, time, and resources for execution. That’s where automated weighing system solutions come to your rescue. The automated weight-based control helps address many of the issues encountered with manual weighing. These are the high-precision weighing systems that ensure higher productivity, greater efficiency, and consistency of results. Additionally, the balances used in these systems don’t physically contact the products being measured which helps prevent the risk of sample contamination.

TGA-4000 Thermogravimetric Analyser

Thermogravimetric Analyzer

The Labfit Thermogravimetric Analysis Equipment TGA 4000 is designed to make your routine measurements quick, easy, and convenient. This trustworthy device is carefully designed to offer precise measurement of a sample’s thermal stability and concentration of volatile constituents. It does this by observing the weight change in the sample by continuously heating it at a constant temperature.

Types of Thermogravimetric Analyzers

The Labfit thermogravimetric analysis equipment is best used for the organic analysis of organic compounds such as soils, plants, iron ore, bauxite ore, cement, etc.

The types of thermogravimetric analyzers available are:

  • Dynamic TGA Analyzer.
  • Isothermal or Static TGA Analyzer.
  • Quasistatic TGA Analyzer.

Laboratory Sample Weight Loss – Automated Precision Weighing System

Automated Precision Weighing System for Loss On Ignition

The Labfit WS3000 Weigh Station is an automated precision weighing system for your Loss on Ignition samples. The controlled environment reduces the risk of incorrectly recorded weights caused by drafts. The system is easy to use, all you have to do is place a sample carousel into the weigh station to start the weigh capture. The system weighs the initial weight of the sample crucible before prompting you to add the sample. The system includes a barcode scanner for easy sample input.

Weights are captured by 2 analytical balances with a resolution of 0.1mg and with a 42 sample capacity, all sample weights take less than 2 minutes to complete. Much faster and more accurate than weighing by hand as you have to open and the balance door, tare, add sample, close balance door in traditional weight capture set ups in laboratories. The Labfit WS3000 Weigh Station removes this inconvenience because the protective lid is only opened once when you need to add samples or remove the weighed sample from the system.

Why Choose a Labfit Weigh Station for your Catch Weights?

Well traditional weight capture rooms are not always the perfect environment for capturing your weights for Loss on Ignition analysis. The WS3000 Weigh Station is faster and less prone to interfering cross drafts associated with air-conditioning systems or poor environmental controls within the laboratory. Correct weight capture is extremely important for the correct result to be obtained from any analytical instruments with very detection limits. Automated Loss On Ignition Weighing Solution – Precisely

The Labfit WS3000 Weigh Station is designed to accommodate your Labfit LOI4000 Loss On Ignition System or the Labfit TGA3000 Automated Thermogravimetric Analyser because it can export directly to these systems with a click of a button by just selecting the “Machine ID” that corresponds to your LOI4000 and TGA3000 system. The Labfit TGA and LOI sample carousels fit directly into weigh station removing an extra step in your weighing process. After the weights have been captured you then move the TGA – LOI sample to either the Labfit TGA3000 Automated Thermogravimetric Analyser or the LOI4000 Robotic Loss On Ignition systems ready for analysis. The weighing environment is stable with no drafts or outside interference affecting the weights being captured by the balances.

Your XRF Flux Weighing Solution

The Labfit WS3000 Weigh Station has an extra weighing mode for XRF Flux and the XRF bead making process. The sample carousel holds a total of 36 samples and is designed to suit the Platinum crucibles used in the XRF bead making process. The weigh station captures and records the initial weigh if the crucible, the sample weigh and the flux weight. Once these weights have been recorded the weights can then be exported to your LIMS system for further laboratory processes. The weigh station will weigh all 36 samples in under 2 minutes for each weight cycle.
